Landmark resort near Ogunquit to undergo significant renovation and repositioning

Ogunquit, ME. – November 2, 2015 – Rockbridge named Destination Hotels as the new operator for The Cliff House Resort & Spa, a spectacular oceanfront hotel located on 70 acres outside Ogunquit, Maine, just an hour North of Boston. Destination Hotels specializes in independent hotels and resorts in North America.

Rockbridge closed the property at the end of October to oversee a multi-million dollar renovation, with plans for re-opening The Cliff House in July 2016 as a four-star, year-round resort to serve the needs of domestic leisure travelers, larger social and group meeting customers and discerning New England vacationers as well.

“The Cliff House has one of the most spectacular settings in all of New England,” noted Jim Merkel, Rockbridge CEO. “We have focused on every detail and believe that following the renovation, we will have a hotel worthy of its location.”

The resort will feature over 26,000 square feet of indoor meeting space plus three outdoor event venues, making it one the largest event and banquet facilities in on the New England Coast, ideal for weddings, social functions and corporate retreats.

As part of the repositioning, the resort will re-open with fully renovated guestrooms with luxurious and contemporary touches; a reconcepting of the resort’s restaurants and bars, including a classic Maine lobster shack and a feature restaurant showcasing locally-sourced cuisine; a new 4,300 square foot ballroom with floor to ceiling oceanfront views; and a brand new 9,000 square foot full-service spa and fitness center. In April 2017, additional guestroom suites will open featuring panoramic cliffside ocean views.

“We are thrilled to cultivate our inaugural partnership with Rockbridge and add such an iconic resort in the region to our growing portfolio,” said Jamie Sabatier, president and chief operating officer of Destination Hotels. “Based on Destination’s resort expertise, we are confident that The Cliff House Resort & Spa will re-emerge successfully as one of the premier destinations on the New England coastline.”

The Cliff House Resort & Spa first opened during the post-Civil War era in 1872, during the spur of the New England railroad industry by Elsie Jane Weare. Having been passed down through four generations of Weare Family innkeepers, The Cliff House Resort & Spa has remained an ideal New England escape on the Maine coastline. This established oceanfront resort is ideally situated an hour outside Boston, between York and Ogunquit. Guests of the property have preferred privileges at neighboring Cape Neddick Country Club golf course.
