Nov. 17–WILMINGTON — Hilton's hotel beside the Cape Fear River is getting a new name and an $8.5 million face-lift.

The hotel brand announced Friday that the Hilton Wilmington Riverside will be re-branded as the Hotel Ballast Wilmington, part of Hilton's Tapestry Collection of upscale hotels. Renovations to the hotel's 272 rooms, meetings space, pool, lobby and corridors, plus the addition of a bridal suite, will be completed in early 2018.

"With its name inspired by the maritime significance in the destination, Hotel Ballast provides travelers an ideal location on the Cape Fear waterfront with unobstructed views of the USS North Carolina Battleship as well as access to the Riverwalk, a full mile of boardwalk that boasts some of Wilmington's best shopping and dining," a news release said.

The hotel opened in 1970 and remains the largest in downtown Wilmington, even as the area experiences a hotel building boom. Hilton launched its Tapestry Collection in January, and on Friday also announced the rebranding of its hotel in downtown Savannah, Georgia, and the opening of the Troubadour New Orleans.
