The PDA Group to Launch New “Virtual Tourist” Software Chicago, Ill. — September 6, 2000 – Jeff Norton, CTO of The PDA Group, has recently announced that the firm is set to release a new version of software presently being called “ Virtual Tourist”.
Partnered with IBM, the world’s leading information technology company, The PDA Group designed the software program, with IBM providing the database engine driving the system – a new product called DB2 Everyplace. The software will be downloaded onto personal digital assistants manufactured by Handspring. Handspring consists of the core team that brought the world the PalmPilot, the fastest selling computer product in history. The PDA Group specifically chose the Handspring device, due to its springboard technology which allows for easy integration of the “Virtual Tourist” software, as well as future software program releases currently in the works.
“Virtual Tourist” will be implemented by various hotels and convention sites in major metropolitan areas across the country, and will act as a veritable hand-held concierge. The program allows hotel guests and convention goers to access a comprehensive database of useful local information, directly from these small wireless appliances. At the touch of their fingertips, individuals can locate area restaurants, theaters, businesses, services, etc., as well as inquire about pertinent convention information, i.e., scheduling and daily events. In addition, through wireless technologies, hotel guests will even be able to interface with selected hotel departments such as housekeeping, dry cleaners and room service.
