Bertolli Olive Oil Launches First Annual
Sous Chef Awards;
A Tribute to the Unsung Heroes of the Culinary
World
NEW YORK, Dec. 18, 2000 - Everyone is familiar with the old adage, Behind
every great man, there is a great woman. Consider this concept
Behind every great executive chef, there is a great sous chef.
This theory is certainly not as well-known as the former, but that is soon
to change with the launch of the First Annual Bertolli Sous Chef Awards
to honor the top 10 sous chefs in the United States.
Sous chefs are the unsung heroes of the culinary arena, which is why
Bertolli created this awards program for them, said Bill Monroe, president
and chief executive officer of Bertolli USA, Inc. We want to recognize
those who are valuable contributors to the success of restaurants throughout
the country.
The competition is open to sous chefs working in any restaurant in
the United States. Bertolli will accept nomination forms beginning
on December 7, 2000 through February 28, 2001. Ten finalists will
be selected in March 2001 based on the following equally weighted criteria:
-
Experience (professional as well as student training)
-
References (verbal or written) from executive chef and other staff at restaurant
where sous chef is employed
-
Recognition of restaurant or sous chef (e.g., reviews, media coverage,
awards)
-
Skill (specific specialty, creativity in preparation and presentation)
Each of 10 finalists and a guest will be flown to New York on August 3,
2001, to be honored at an awards reception attended by food media and other
culinary influencers. Using the above criteria, the first, second,
and third prize winners will be selected by a panel consisting of:
-
Nick Stellino, celebrity chef and book author
-
Paul Barrett, Chair of the International Association of Culinary Professionals
Foundation and Communications Manager for Bertolli USA, Inc.
-
Representative of the food media, TBD
All finalists will receive a framed certificate of honor, along with a
case of premium Bertolli Olive Oil. The first, second, and third
prize winners will also receive cash prizes and a plaque, to be presented
at an awards ceremony in Tarrytown, New York at Lyndhurst, one of Americas
finest Gothic Revival mansions and a National Trust for Historic Preservation
property. Winners will also benefit from recognition within the culinary
field.
