How Should Casino-Hotels Be Rated?

E-mail:  [email protected]
April 2007 - Should the standard AAA full service hotel service expectations apply at a casino-hotel?  How much emphasis should be allotted to casino services?  Should casino-specific factors like services, cleanliness, and employee performance be considered at all?  Is it fair to ignore the casino operation entirely and rate the hotel solely on its own merits?

In my professional opinion, casino-hotels should be treated like other lodging operations; all services and facilities should be inspected and evaluated to determine the AAA rating.  All employees should be held to the same rigorous standards of appearance,  job performance, and hospitality.  All physical facilities should be measured by the same criteria of cleanliness, maintenance, and adherence to the applicable rating  expectations.

I do not believe the casino operation should have any undue impact on the rating decision.  I suggest it should be considered as any other service is at a hotel.

AAA does not have rating guidelines for casinos at this time; should there be specific criteria?  I believe AAA should consider some changes to the Diamond Rating Guidelines to address this issue.  In doing so, I would suggest soliciting input and assistance from the casino industry.

Until there are casino-specific guidelines,  I would advocate rating a casino-hotel like any other full service lodging.
