WICHITA, Kan. - Nov. 22, 1999 - Candlewood Hotel Co. (Nasdaq:CNDL -
news) today announced plans to franchise Cambridge Suites by Candlewood,
a new upscale hotel concept based on the value-oriented philosophy of the
Candlewood Suites brand.
Cambridge Suites by Candlewood builds upon the features, comfort and amenities familiar to Candlewood Suites guests, including: free laundry facilities; free local phone calls, low-cost long distance and two phone lines; free video and CD library; and use of the honor-system-based Candlewood Cupboard food and sundries pantry. In addition, Cambridge Suites by Candlewood will offer a wider variety of room suite choiceswith fully equipped kitchens in many rooms. Guests will also enjoy complimentary continental breakfast, recreational facilities (such as a pool, ball court, or beach), and a hospitality area. A Cambridge Suites by Candlewood prototype has been in operation here for more than two years, a converted property that once was the prototype Residence Inn. My original Residence Inn is now a Cambridge Suites by Candlewood, says Candlewood Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Jack DeBoer, where we have refined and tested our new upscale concept. DeBoer founded Residence Inn and later sold it to Marriott. Candlewood President and Chief Operating Officer Jim Roos says Cambridge Suites by Candlewood evolved, in part, from a persistent stream of inquiries from parties interested in converting an existing property into a Candlewood Suites. While the options presented were not viable plans for Candlewood Suitesall of which have been new constructionsome candidates fit the new concept perfectly, says Roos. For example, he continues, there might be an existing beachfront or other resort location where new construction is not an option, but a conversion is. The Cambridge Suites by Candlewood brand allows for flexibility in adapting existing properties of various sizes and designs, while assuring quality and good value. Candlewood Hotel Co. owns, operates and franchises Candlewood Suites, which targets mid-market business travelers and others on short or long-term travel. There are currently 76 Candlewood Suites open coast-to-coast, with more under construction. DeBoer, who founded Residence Inn and co-founded Summerfield Suites in the 1970s and 1980s, founded Candlewood in 1995. He is recognized in the hotel industry as the creator of the extended-stay concept. |
