| ORLANDO - September 7, 1999 - Dr. Anthony G. Marshall, president
and CEO of the Educational Institute of the American Hotel & Motel
Association (AH&MA), has won the Florida Hotel & Motel Association’s
(FH&MA) 1999 Paul Brown Award for his outstanding leadership and accomplishments
in hospitality education.
Named for the St. Petersburg hotelier who founded the FH&MA educational
trust fund, the Paul Brown Award is given annually to a Florida educator
or hotelier who creates significant advances in the industry’s education
and training programs.
Marshall is a well-known columnist, educator, lecturer, lawyer and hospitality
management professional. He accepted his leadership position at the
Orlando-based Educational Institute (EI) a year ago, after 27 years as
dean of the School of Hospitality Management at Florida International University
(FIU) in Miami. In this position, he was senior dean and publisher
of the FIU Hospitality Review.
“Tony Marshall and I have known each other for nearly 20 years, and
I can think of no one more deserving of this recognition,” said FH&MA’s
president/CEO Thomas A. Waits. “His dedication to meeting the
education needs of Florida tourism, and specifically the lodging community,
is well-known. His contributions as Dean at FIU, and now as CEO at
EI are many—and they continue. FH&MA is proud to add his name
to its honor roll of hoteliers and educators who have done so much in education
service to our industry.”
Marshall’s previous hospitality industry recognitions include the Diplomate
award from the National Restaurant Association, Lamp of Knowledge from
AH&MA and Innkey award from the Greater Miami and Beaches Hotel Association.
Prior to his tenure at FIU, Marshall was a hospitality management consultant
in New York City. He was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in
Hotel Administration from the University of New Hampshire and a Juris Doctorate
from Syracuse University, College of Law.
Marshall also is the author of two hospitality industry books, “Don’t
Lose Your Hotel by Accident” and “Hotel Restaurant and Travel Law.”
He also writes a semi-monthly column, “At Your Risk,” published in Hotel
