Michael Feigenbaum, New GM at Westin Michigan Avenue,  Sees Employee Relations as Key to Success

CHICAGO, Aug. 2, 1999 - A strong and positive working environment for hotel employees is essential to the success of a Chicago hotel, explained newly appointed Westin Michigan Avenue Hotel General Manager Michael Feigenbaum.

It doesnt replace the priority of providing good guest services but the two go hand in hand, Feigenbaum said.  A veteran hotel industry manager, Feigenbaum said that Chicagos hotel industry is healthy. He said that in a healthy industry environment, its natural for hotels to focus on improving the service side of their business.  The service side of the industry is very important, obviously. Chicago has a very healthy and strong hotel industry and it reflects positively on our city, said Feigenbaum, who is married and has three children.

And, when you have a healthy industry like ours, with first class accommodations like those at Westin Michigan Avenue, we can focus on service. But we cant be successful unless we also focus on providing a healthy working environment to our employees.

Feigenbaum, who previously worked for three years as general manager of the Arlington Park Hilton Hotel, said that Westin Michigan Avenue, 909 North Michigan Ave., places a high priority on providing employees with a satisfying working environment.

I may be the general manager, but its the employee who is the front line contact with guests. Those contacts set the guests experience here and nothing is more important than that, Feigenbaum explained.  We know that we need to pay attention to our employees and we do. Feigenbaum outlined 9 key elements the Westin Michigan Avenue Hotel follows to provide a positive working environment for its employees.

They are:

  • Providing competitive salaries and wages
  • Establishing a rewards and recognition program
  • Constant communications and idea sharing
  • Visible and accessible management team
  • Training and career development support and guidance
  • Striving for a working climate that is positive, friendly and that
  • instills employee pride
  • Encourage teamwork
  • Provide an atmosphere that gives employees the necessary tools for them to complete their assignments, meet their responsibilities and to excel at their jobs
  • Reinforce the dedication of management to be the employer that is the best place to work
