The $47-million Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center Opens; Owned by Georgia Tech Foundation Inc.

 
September 16, 2003 - The new $47-million Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center (GTHCC), which will provide accommodations and meeting spaces for the business, educational and civic communities, officially opened with a festive ribbon-cutting ceremony September 4, 2003 in Midtown Atlanta. The high-tech facility is owned by the Georgia Tech Foundation Inc. and managed by Crestline Hotels & Resorts Inc.

Honorable Andrew Young, former U.N. ambassador, U.S. congressman and Atlanta mayor, and dignitaries from the Georgia Institute of Technology, the Georgia Tech Foundation, the Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center, Crestline Hotels & Resorts Inc. and Barceló Crestline. Remarks fitting for the occasion were delivered by Ms. Hill, Ambassador Young, H. Hammond Stith Jr., past chairman of the Georgia Tech Foundation Inc.; G. Wayne Clough, president of the Georgia Institute of Technology; and Dave Durbin, president and chief executive officer of Crestline Hotels & Resorts Inc. A reception and tours followed the ceremony.

The GTHCC, located at 800 Spring St. NW, is part of the $196-million Technology Square development that includes the Global Learning Center, the DuPree College of Management, the Economic Development Institute and the Georgia Tech Bookstore plus retail space and restaurants. The conference center alone has created 200 new jobs.

Overlooking a landscaped outdoor courtyard, the eight-story, 252-room GTHCC offers 21,000 square feet of executive meeting space including 18 meeting rooms and a 7,200-square-foot ballroom, an all-day dining room and club lounge, an indoor swimming pool, and a fully equipped fitness center. The adjacent Global Learning Center has three 75-seat amphitheatres, a 125-seat amphitheatre, a 250-seat amphitheatre and a selection of meeting rooms. The hotel and other Georgia Tech facilities feature state-of-the-art technology with the ability to project video conferencing around the world with simultaneous translations. In addition, the GTHCC provides a showcase for Georgia Tech memorabilia.

Also participating in the opening festivities were the Georgia Tech Marching Band, Cheerleaders and mascot �Buzz.� A jazz trio entertained in the GTHCC lobby, and a top 40 band played tunes in the ballroom. Guests enjoyed hors d�oeuvres and cocktails interspersed throughout the facility. 

Owned by the Georgia Tech Foundation Inc., the GTHCC is managed by Crestline Hotels & Resorts Inc., which manages 40 hotels, resorts, conference facilities and convention centers in the United States. Barceló Crestline Corp. is the parent company of Crestline Hotels & Resorts Inc.
