 Clarissa Simpson, Head Maitre d�Hotel at Spice Island Beach Resort in Grenada, Receives 2003 Supervisor of the Year

and American Express

GRENADA (July 7, 2003) � Clarissa Simpson, Head Maitre d�Hotel of the luxurious Spice Island Beach Resort in Grenada, was recognized with the coveted honor of 2003 Supervisor of the Year from the Caribbean Hotel Association (CHA) and American Express at a special awards luncheon held June 25 during CHA�s Caribbean Hotel Industry Conference (CHIC) at the Barceló Bávaro Convention Center in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. 
            
On hand to celebrate Clarissa�s achievement were her daughter, Glendalynne; Royston Hopkin, CMG, and Betty Hopkin, owners of Spice Island Beach Resort; Brian Hardy, the resort manager, and his wife, Leslie-Ann Hardy; Nerissa Hopkin, director and assistant manager; and Janelle Hopkin.
            
�We are so extremely pleased and honored that Clarissa was bestowed this top distinction from the Caribbean Hotel Association and American Express,� said Royston Hopkin, CMG, owner and managing director of the 66-room, upscale property.  
           
�This crowning achievement serves as a testament to the high quality of staff we employ at the resort plus it reflects our continued dedication to training and elevating the level of service at our property.  It is individuals such as Clarissa that make a world of difference in the vacation experience we offer our guests,� he added.
           
A former nursing assistant who worked on a Child Care Assistance Project with Grenada�s Ministry of Health, Clarissa Simpson went from caring for children to caring for colleagues and guests.  
            
She began her career at Spice in 1987 as a waitress, and her positive attitude and job dedication, plus voluntary extensive hospitality training courses over the years, allowed her to rise to Dining Room Supervisor, Maitre d�Hotel and her current position of Head Maitre d�Hotel.  
            
Since the hotel has always emphasized the importance of education, Spice�s management selected her to attend hands-on training at the Swallow Royal Hotel Bristol in the United Kingdom and Curtain Bluff in Antigua.  In her current role as Head Maitre d�Hotel, she manages a team of 40 people with charm and efficiency and always performs at a high level of excellence.
            
The CHA/American Express Supervisor of the Year award honors individuals who demonstrate exceptional leadership in their management abilities.  Supervisor applications, which judge the worker on technical competence, hospitality and supervisory skills, are submitted by the manager of the property.  Other criteria in the selection of Supervisor of the Year are: community activities; sporting activities; previous awards; owner/general manager�s report; supervisor�s report; letters of recognition from guests; management of peers; photos; community testimonials and educational qualifications.
