California Hotel & Lodging Association, the Largest
State Lodging Association in the Nation, Reaches
1,600 Property Members
SACRAMENTO, Calif.- July 25, 2002 - Firmly establishing itself as the largest state lodging association in the nation, the California Hotel & Lodging Association (CH&LA) recently surpassed 1,600 member properties, representing an increase of over 7% in new property members from last year. CH&LA's membership now encompasses more than 210,000 rooms, which is approximately one-half of all the rooms in California.

"This is truly an historic moment for the California Hotel & Lodging Association," commented James O.  Abrams, Executive Vice President of CH&LA. "As the premier lodging association in California, our recent growth speaks volumes. In today's economy, the lodging industry is depending on CH&LA to provide valuable programs and legislative advocacy for the industry."

The diversity of California's lodging industry is evident from the wide range of properties that are members of CH&LA. From the largest CH&LA member, the 1,900 room San Francisco Hilton & Towers, to the smallest member, the two room Palisades Paradise Bed & Breakfast, CH&LA provides a multitude of programs and services tailored for any size property. "Approximately one-half of CH&LA's membership is comprised of properties under 100 rooms, including many bed & breakfast inns and independent lodging properties," stated Abrams. "With no more than 20% of CH&LA member properties in any single size category, CH&LA prides itself on serving the needs of the entire industry."

CH&LA is also the state's only affiliate of the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA), which provides representation and advocacy of the lodging industry's interests before legislators and regulators on a national basis. CH&LA's affiliation with AH&LA also allows it to focus on providing educational and training materials for California's hospitality industry through AH&LA's Educational Institute, the only national educational program for the hospitality industry. "We're very pleased to be affiliated with CH&LA, and that CH&LA has exceeded the 1,600 member milestone," commented AH&LA President & CEO Joseph A. McInerney, CHA. "The growth of CH&LA speaks for itself. CH&LA provides valuable programs and services to the California lodging industry."

The California Hotel & Lodging Association (CH&LA) is the largest state lodging industry trade association in the country. Its member properties consist of hotels, motels, bed and breakfast inns, guest ranches, resorts, spas, condominium rentals, timeshares, and vacation home rentals located throughout California. CH&LA's mission is to "be the indispensable resource for communicating and protecting the rights and interests of the California lodging industry, for providing educational training and cost-saving programs for all segments of the industry, and for supporting strategic alliances to promote the value of California tourism and travel." Sacramento-based CH&LA has been representing California's lodging industry for more than a century.
