After a 4 Year $20 million Restoration the Historic
Mountain View Grand Hotel Re-opens
May 22, 2002 - Draped in proud displays of red, white and blue, one of Americas national treasures, the Mountain View Grand Hotel, today re-opens its doors to the public after 15 years. Built in 1865 and admired as an enduring White Mountain retreat for Presidents, celebrities and socialites, the Mountain View Grand was resurrected by Kevin and Joanne Craffey, from Duxbury, Massachusetts, who purchased the hotel in 1998.

During the past four years, the Craffeys faced a series of physical and financial hurdles, including the passing of two amendments to the New Hampshire state constitution as well as significant public and private collaboration to secure the necessary financing to complete the project. Now this sprawling structure possesses all the modern amenities todays discerning travelers demand, including:

* 145 guest rooms, all boasting unparallel views of the White Mountains of New Hampshire, appointed with custom-made mahogany furniture designed specifically for each differently configured room

* The majestic Tower Spa, located in the Italian revival-style tower atop the hotel, offering state-of-the-art European spa treatments in 15 treatment rooms as well as a Japanese chromo tub, perched at the top of the tower commanding breathtaking 360-degree White Mountain views

* The Back Room at Nicky Finns offers a true flashback to the roaring 1920s and 1930s

The last functioning years of the Mountain View House were fraught with stress and uncertainty. In 1986, after several summers producing marginal financial returns, the hotel closed its doors. In 1989 all of the contents of the hotel were put up for auction. The Mountain View House was purchased in 1998 by a young entrepreneur, Kevin Craffey who worked diligently to re-create the splendor of the golden days of the grand resort hotels in the White Mountains. The new Mountain View Grand reopens in May 2002 after completion of a $20 million restoration.

* Fine dining in four elegantly designed rooms at Juliets restaurant, and more casual fare at Nicky Finns Lounge or the outdoor poolside Clubhouse Cafe and Grill

The dedication of the Mountain View Grand will be a very proud moment for my family and a testament of what can happen when government and private industry work together, said Kevin Craffey, owner and developer. It also celebrates the spirit of so many people who work tirelessly to preserve this glorious American treasure.

Craffeys vision was to transform the hotel into a resort destination with 21st century sensibility providing all the elements of luxury accommodations in a building conceived 137 years ago. Highlights of the restoration project included:

  • Removing 57 acres of wallpaper
  • Reglazing 5,622 window panes
  • Restoring and repainting 78 miles of 137-year-old, exterior cedar planking
  • Removing and replacing approximately 38 miles of old mechanical wiring, piping and plumbing
On May 22nd, as the Craffey Family marks the official dedication of the property, the Mountain View Grand will reclaim its place in American history and provide travelers a chance to share in the hotels glorious past.

Located in Whitefield, New Hampshire, The Mountain View Grand is an 1865 Colonial Revival resort offering four season recreation and luxury accommodations situated on 350 acres of pristine wilderness. Set among the foothills of the White Mountains just north of Franconia Notch, this architectural treasure features a full-service European spa, a 100-year-old golf course and access to year-round recreational activities including hiking, biking, swimming, skiing, snow shoeing and much more. The Mountain View Grand is located on Mountain View Road in Whitefield, N.H., about 160 miles from Boston, 110 miles from Manchester, N.H., 90 miles from Concord, N.H., and 100 miles from Burlington, Vt.
