EI Offers Online Exams for Professional
Certification Candidates

ORLANDO, Fla., March 2002 - Professional certification candidates can now get instant examination results with the new online certification exam option available from the Educational Institute of the American Hotel & Lodging Association.  This new way to take the exam for EI's executive and department-head level professional certification programs enables candidates to receive immediate test results, rather than waiting for three weeks to receive their scores by mail. They also get an item analysis that details the candidate's responses.

This is particularly helpful if they do not pass the exam the first time, because they are able to target their study efforts before attempting the retake examination.  "The online exam is the only way to take the CHA exam!" said E. Jon Bjornson, CHA, ACI, training manager for Cendant Hospitality Training Services. "When I didn't pass the test the first time, I was able to continue with my studying momentum until I took the test the second time. Then I had the pleasure of seeing 'Congratulation, you passed,' in big, bold letters. It was a feeling of pride in achievement of that goal."

EI offers online exams for the following professional designations:

  • Certified Hotel Administrator (CHA)
  • Certified Lodging Manager (CLM)
  • Certified Rooms Division Executive (CRDE)
  • Certified Food and Beverage Executive (CFBE)
  • Certified Human Resources Executive (CHRE)
  • Certified Hospitality Housekeeping Executive (CHHE)
  • Certified Engineering Operations Executive (CEOE)
  • Certified Hospitality Sales Professional (CHSP)
  • Certified Hospitality Trainer (CHT)
  • Certified Hospitality Supervisor (CHS)
According to Barbara Blankenship, director of certification for the Educational Institute, the online exam eliminates the need to send paper exams and verifying documents back and forth through the mail, saving time and eliminating the possibility that papers might get lost or misdirected.  "We have had candidates as far away as South Korea take the exam online," she noted. "You can imagine the time savings alone, as well as the savings in postal expenses."

The online exam is also more secure than the paper exam, she said.  "We have found the online product to be very well put together, easy to understand and use," said Ed Manley, CFE, president and CEO, International Food Service Executives Association. "I love the immediacy of the whole process." Bjornson, who serves as a exam proctor for other CHA candidates, noted that offering candidates the opportunity to take the test online seems like a logical choice.  "Everyone [in our organization] agreed with me that it is the best way to take any certification exam," he said.

Established in 1953 as a nonprofit educational foundation of the American Hotel & Lodging Association, the Educational Institute is the premier source for quality hospitality education, training, and professional certification, serving the needs and advancing the excellence of hospitality schools and industries worldwide.
