 Broughton Hospitality Group Opens Two Hotels in California;
Santa Barbara and Palm Springs

PALM DESERT, CA (October. 22, 2001) - After acquiring an ideally located hotel asset in Palm Desert, CA in January 2001, Huntington Beach, CA-based Broughton Hospitality Group has announced the renovation, repositioning and the October 2001 opening of MOJAVEa desert resort. Inspired by the sophistication, romance and glamour of the 1940s, Mojave has been meticulously transfigured by the design firm, Candra Scott & Anderson of San Francisco. Located just steps from the famous El Paseo shopping district, known as the Rodeo Drive of the Desert, Mojave is the first luxury boutique hotel in the affluent community of Palm Desert, California. Mojave is the perfect alternative for the more discriminating, style-conscious traveler who seeks quality amenities and personal service. says Larry Broughton, Founder of Broughton Hospitality Group. Hotel Mojave bridges the gap between the areas small motels and the impersonal mega resorts, he adds.
Guestrooms at Mojave rest in a tranquil garden setting with dozens of mature palm and citrus trees, a relaxing pool and spa, and outdoor massage treatment cabana.

Guest accommodations at Mojave include courtyard and deluxe kitchenette rooms, executive suites with native stone fireplaces, and the spacious Mojave Suite with its own living room. All guest rooms and suites feature television/VCR with a video library of 1940s classics; CD/clock radios with era music; plush Four Seasons bed sets and crisp jacquard striped linens & down blankets; monogrammed bathrobes; Molton Brown bath products; and much more. A stay at Mojave will include a continental breakfast each morning featuring local baked goods and fruit fresh from the hotels own citrus trees, as well as a complimentary afternoon Lemon Drop cocktail by the pool.

Renowned design firm, Candra Scott & Anderson of San Francisco, which specializes in the historic renovation of landmark hotels was selected to oversee the redesign of the 24-room hotel project. The concept was to return the hotel to its original 1940s desert resort glamour. We weave the history of a place, the intrinsic beauty of the architecture, the spirit of the people and the events that have shaped the local scene together to create an experience that is unforgettable, says partner Richard Anderson of CS&A. Candra Scott & Anderson is responsible for many notable hotel renovation projects, including Hotel Rex, Hotel Boheme, and the Hotel Majestic in San Francisco, as well as the Governor Hotel in Portland, and Ashland Springs Hotel in Ashland, Oregon.

Seagrass carpeting, French 1940s Moderne furniture, and a rare collection of Stephen Willard vintage desert black & white photography highlights the intimate lobby of Mojave.  Guestrooms are outfitted in custom bleached oak furniture based on 1940s originals, as well as French Moderne armchairs and occasional tables. A soothing palette of colors: cream, sand and saffron are juxtaposed against a monogrammed tangerine blanket splashed at the foot of the bed.

Larry Broughton founded Broughton Hospitality Group, Inc after spending twelve years as Vice President & Partner with Joie de Vivre Hospitality, Northern Californias largest independent boutique hotel operator (still a Partner in the company, among the JdV portfolio are The Phoenix, Hotel Rex, Hotel Del Sol and Costanoa). Now, on his own, Broughton also operates Santa Barbaras newest luxury boutique hotel, Inn of the Spanish Garden, which opened in September 2001 and epitomizes the spirit, intrigue, and romance of the Spanish Colonial tradition of Old Town Santa Barbara.  Whenever possible, we try to transport our guests to another place and time if only for an evening, says Broughton.

Santa Barbara's Only Downtown Luxury Hotel

Located among the Citys historic sites in its oldest neighborhood, Inn of the Spanish Garden is just steps from Santa Barbaras finest shops, museums, theaters, corporate offices and downtown dining.  Pain-staking efforts were made by the areas finest craftspeople to give this new hotel a true historic ambiance.  The hotel is reminiscent of an 18th century Spanish family compound that has been meticulously transfigured to offer modern luxury conveniences, says Larry Broughton.  The unique nature of the hotel continues to unfold as you walk through its

beautiful courtyards every turn offers an interesting and unexpected surprise, he adds.  In keeping with the Spanish - Mediterranean architecture and design that has made Santa Barbara famous, the hotel features antique lobby chandeliers, ornate ironwork, a courtyard fountain (complete with goldfish and turtles), beautiful gardens, coved and vaulted ceilings, and arched doorways throughout.

Although Inn of the Spanish Garden sits among the sites of Santa Barbaras Historic Presidio District, its services and amenities are clearly 21st century.  Each guestroom offers the latest high speed Internet and cordless telephone technology, television/VCR combos, French press coffee makers, fireplaces, deep water soaking tubs, luxurious beds, and 300 thread count Egyptian cotton Frette linens, towels, and bathrobes.   Each room has either an oversized private balcony which overlooks one of the courtyards, or a private gardenboth provide a peaceful spot to enjoy a morning cappuccino, or evening glass of wine.  The hotel also features a sparkling lap pool, exercise room, and full-service executive boardroom.
