Skye Condominiums tower taking shape; hotel opens in September (The Charlotte Observer)

By Eric Frazier, The Charlotte ObserverMcClatchy-Tribune Regional News

May 08--Plans for development of the Skye Condominiums tower in uptown Charlotte came into clearer focus Wednesday as officials announced a general manager for the building's 172-room hotel and offered more details about the residential floors.

The 22-story high-rise, at South Caldwell and Third streets, will include 67 luxury condominiums, ground-floor retail space, an open-air rooftop restaurant and a Hyatt Place Charlotte/Downtown Hotel.

Don Lockhart has been named general manager of the hotel. He most recently served as general manager for Hyatt House Charlotte Center City.

Sales of the first phase of the condos are expected to be closed in the third quarter, while the hotel is expected to open in September. Ground-level valet parking will be available, and an express elevator will take hotel guests to the 10th-floor Hyatt lobby.

Twenty-two condos are under contract, according to the McDevitt Agency, the real estate company representing the developers. A two-bedroom model for the condos will open on the 14th floor, the first floor of condo residences at Skye. Prices will range from the low $200s to just over $2 million each for Skye's two penthouses.

Residents will enjoy a rooftop pool, oversized terraces and Charlotte's only valet-parking residence uptown, officials said. The restaurant tenant hasn't been named yet.

Previously known as The Park, the tower became a sore spot in uptown's skyline after developer problems left it rusting and unfinished.

Small Brothers Real Estate Development bought the building out of foreclosure in October 2009.
