Hotel Developer Seeks New Fort Smith Airport Project (Times Record, Fort Smith, Ark.)

June 06--A hotelier who developed Hilton Homewood Suites at the Fort Smith Regional Airport is pursuing a new project along Phoenix Avenue.

At a special meeting Thursday, the Fort Smith Airport Commission approved a letter of intent to lease airport property for the new development.

"It entails the very first steps, the preparatory steps, as a party has expressed interest in a possible development along airport property along Phoenix," Airport Director John Parker said. "A letter of intent would in essence establish the six-month due-diligence period for both parties to see if all the requirements can be met for development in that location."

Developer Marion Driscoll offered few details about his new project.

"At the present time, I'm not at liberty to discuss the project," he said. "We're in the due-diligence stage. Right now, it's just to see if it's even feasible to do."

The development would take two or three acres, Parker said.

"It really depends on what goes in that location, but it's going to be a small parcel," he said.

The property was once farmland, Parker added.

Several years ago, Driscoll developed Hilton Homewood Suites at the airport's entrance.

"I'm a developer in town and we do lots of different projects -- hotels and everything else, rentals, new homes," he said.
