Just a quick note to say how much I enjoyed the fact that you wrote your article but not that I enjoyed reading it.
You hit the nail fair and square on the head. I have lived the experience you described and shaken my head in what is tantamount to despair.
I have said it myself on many occasions that HR departments are not in the business of hiring people. The job or the offer of a job usually comes from the person you will work for.
So what is the purpose of HR departments. Finally after many years I discovered that that don't hire well, they don't orientate well, they don't train well, they don't assist in the process of growing you. So what do they do well? They separate you well. The sole purpose of HR departments is to ensure that when it is your time (either voluntarily or involuntarily) to separate, that you do it at minimum risk to the comapny.
Your story Barry recounts the dismal state of affairs in the employer/employee relationship today. I forecast a total meltdown soon.
Thanks for a great article.
